About

As founder and director of Hypnosis & Brief Therapy Center, I apply over 30 years of professional hypnotherapy and counseling experience helping individuals, couples, children and families to resolve difficulties and problems.

A hiker and camper, I opened a counseling practice in Oregon in the 1980s. Currently, I provide Therapy and Hypnotherapy in Portland and Beaverton, Oregon, and training for health care professionals in Ericksonian Hypnosis and in Brief Therapy along with consultations to therapists, physicians, attorneys, schools, and nursing care centers.

I do not diagnose or treat classifications of mental disorders. Instead, I view problems as arising as a consequence of daily living and the changes we encounter as we move through our family life cycle. These include courtship, marriage, childbirth and dealing with the young, weaning parents from children, middle marriage difficulties, retirement and old age.

In Brief Therapy the therapist focuses on the presenting problem and what is happening in the present, rather than going back in time and trying to ascertain its origin, where it is uncertain that it can ever be reliably determined anyway. And measurable, specific goals are set with clients so we know when goals have been achieved and when therapy can be comfortably ended.

I earned a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of San Francisco and became a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in 1983, retaining it for 22 years until semi-retirement and a focus on teaching.

I received extensive post-graduate training in Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy at the Milton H. Erickson, MD Foundation in Phoenix, Arizona, and in Brief Therapy at Stanford University with the staff of the Brief Therapy Center, Mental Research Institute in Palo Alto, California. Solution-Focused Therapy training was with Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg.

Presently, I hold a faculty position at Spokane Community College. I have taught at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington, LaJolla University in San Diego, California, Lake Washington Institute of Technology in Kirkland, Washington, and San Diego University in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Classes were Ericksonian Hypnosis, Psychology, Brief Therapy, Self-Hypnosis, and English as a Second Language.

I am married and father to three adult children.
